Thank you for your interest in getting involved in Doorstep Library. You’ve gotten in touch at a particularly exciting time, now that we’ve started our expansion across the capital.
Doorstep Library organise teams of volunteers to visit children at home on council estates with backpacks full of books. They read stories, lend books for the week, provide a listening ear for parents and encourage families to get out about in their local community.
Unfortunately, Covid-19 has accelerated educational inequality at an alarming rate and continues to be a growing problem, as a result we’ve had to adapt our home-reading service, and have now launched our new Online Reading Corner – online reading sessions for children and families in their home. Through this new service, we will be able to support those families who need us most and reach even more children going forward!
Rachel, who has been volunteering with us for 10 years now, says:
“I always feel better for spending a few hours reading. So much better than if I had stayed at work!”
Are you passionate about books/literacy/equal opportunities/social justice and looking for a way to give back directly to your local community? This could be the project for you.
